Lactopôle: a museum on milk

Laval boasts the biggest museum in the world dedicated to milk and cheese, as the region has long been a major producer of dairy products. The Lactopôle aims to show visitors how matters dairy have featured large in French culture going back centuries!

This museum preserves memories of the history of milk production around the world, focusing in particular on the industrial revoluation that had such a big effect on dairy production, and on the many major transformations experienced in cattle farming and agriculture over the last two centuries.

Milk production was small scale in the past, but today, it counts among the leading industries in the French food-processing business.

A visit to Lactopôle takes 2 hours as the ultramodern presentations, covering 5,000m² of luminous exhibition spaces, enable visitors to learn in depth about the development and importance of France’s dairy activities.

Going along the towpath beside the Mayenne, you need to leave the greenway beside the river to reach the Lactopôle André Besnier.
