During the Gallo-Roman era of the Golfe des Pictons, Vix was an island surrounded by marshes in the Bas-Poitou region. At the time, the Gulf of the Pictons was a marshy area of 100,000 hectares stretching from the Atlantic Ocean, between the towns of Luçon to the north, La Rochelle to the south and Niort to the east. It is home to numerous islands and peninsulas, including Saint Michel en l'Herm, Marans, Maillezais, Vix and many others. The sea reached as far as Arçais, Coulon, Niort, etc.
The marshes were drained by man, creating a wet marsh and a dry marsh. It wasn't until the 13th century that monks, keen to start farming and rearing livestock, began the first works to drain the marsh. You can explore the different districts of Vix, as well as two wine-growing estates that are part of the Vendée fiefdoms, since it was in Vix that the Romans first introduced vines. Our terroir boasts two award-winning wine producers and numerous market gardeners (specialising in melons).
